Finding friends on the Internet who are like you is the first step in finding the right network for you. By choosing a network of like-minded people, you will find more people who will be interested in you, and others will be more interested in you too.
Here are my top tips for finding like-minded people online:
A. Small communities are almost always better than large ones
The reason why I recommend joining a small community is that it is much easier to connect there. In a small community, every member is important to keep the community alive, and people want to involve you as much as possible. In a large society, you mingle with the crowd, and people may not even recognize you if you haven’t been a member for a long time.
B. Are you interested in playing games with other people on the Internet?
Playing with others online is one of the easiest ways to make friends online. I say it’s easy because you always have something to talk about - a game you both enjoy. And you can even play it together if it is an online game!
And if your game conversations ever go silent, you can personalize them and get to know your gaming friends.
Almost every game has a community you can join, small communities are usually better. See if they have a Discord server that you can join, or better yet join a clan if it’s a multiplayer game. There are usually groups for both casual and hardcore gamers.
C. Niche interest groups on social media
I personally like edible plants and orchids. So I joined several local groups on this topic on Facebook. And through these groups I found many friends who I know would be happy if I visited. We could talk about plants all day long.
I did something similar on Instagram where I have an account dedicated to just one of my interests (plants) and I usually follow other geeks.
After a while, maybe after a few days or weeks, you start to get to know each other by asking questions and liking each other’s photos.
Then when you want to meet up, it’s only natural to send them a message and ask if they would like to eat / drink beer together and talk about your common interests. I will describe this in more detail below.
